Situated at the crossing point of four alpine valleys - the Combe de Savoie, the Tarentaise, the Val d’Arly and the Beaufortain - Albertville, has been a meeting point and a place of cultural exchange since its foundation.

The history of the town shows this. Since its creation in 1836 by King Charles-Albert, who united the city of Conflans and the borough of l’Hopital, Albertville developed through commercial exchange between France, Italy and Switzerland. The energy of the water ways was harnessed and thriving industries were installed (paper mills, tanneries, hydroelectricity…) and it became the administrative centre for the entire district.

In the second half of the 20th Century, as winter sports took off and agriculture thrived, Albertville consolidated its position as a prosperous alpine town.

On the 8th February 1992, the XVIth Winter Olympic Games projected Albertville into the limelight, the town's name was spoken with all the accents of the world and it became a meeting ground for all countries animated by the same enthusiasm for taking part in feats of prowess. In spring 2003 Albertville was awarded the title of “Town of Art and History”. This was official recognition of the town’s ongoing efforts to give due attention to its heritage, and was confirmation of its commitment to bring Albertville to the attention of a bigger and ever wider public.
